Local clean energy advocate declares candidacy in school board race – Pasadena Now

Juan Pablo Albán, an attorney whose son attends Blair High School, announced he is running for the Pasadena Unified School District school board to represent District 7.

“I am pleased to share my job announcement for the position of director of Pasadena Unified, District 7 – the seat that Scott Phelps is leaving,” Albán said.

Albán currently serves as vice-chairman of the school site council at Blair. He is also a clean energy attorney practicing in Pasadena. His wife, Courtney Stuart-Albán, also practices law and lives in Pasadena. Aside from a 10-year-old son in Blair, the couple have a daughter in Year 7 at Westridge School.

Albán came to the United States when he was 9 years old with his mother and brother. He said he attended high school in Houston, graduated from Dartmouth College with honors and earned a law degree from Harvard in 2001.

On his campaign website, www.jp4pusd.comAlbán said his priority, if elected, will be to implement a six-point plan that includes improving independent oversight of the PUSD without micromanaging the superintendent, allocating long-term resources to increase and maintaining enrollment and establishing a “growth mindset” culture. in all classes and for all students.

The plan also includes ensuring better use of unused PUSD properties, closing children’s “opportunity gaps” as soon as possible, and promoting joint lobbying efforts by California school boards in Sacramento to increase the amount and stability of education funding.

The PUSD general election will take place on 8 November. Application materials for candidates for local school board positions will be available July 18 through August 12 at the City Clerk’s Office, 100 North Garfield Ave., Room S228.

Candidates may receive nominations and circulate nomination petitions to collect signatures from registered voters to have their names placed on the PUSD Board of Education Member Ballot for Geographic Sub-Districts 1, 3 , 5 and 7.

Each member of the PUSD School Board serves a four-year term. The functions of the council include adopting the annual budget, approving expenditures, establishing district policy, authorizing the employment of staff, approving textbooks and curricula, and approval of new and innovative academic initiatives.
